The gold jewellery designs are fashionable. Gold jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh has reportedly been stolen from a locker of Nainital Bank. The victim is a retired deputy general manager (DGM) of Food Corporation of India (FCI). The incident has been reported from Shalimar Bagh area of northwest Delhi.
A police official said that they have lodged an FIR in this connection and are looking into the matter. According to the police, the victim Kulbhushan Sobti (65), who was formerly posted at the FCI headquarter in the Capital, has approached them with a written complaint.


"Sobti has alleged that he has a joint account with his wife Chandra Prabha along with a locker at Nainital Bank. He said that he has been operating the account and locker for the past twenty years. He used to put most of his jewellery in this locker. But the last time he visited the bank, he found a bag containing jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh missing from his locker," said a police official.


It was October 18 when Sobti paid a visit to the bank. He had taken some jewellery with him to put in the locker. While doing that he found a brown bag, in which he had kept some gold jewellery and other ornaments, missing. He inquired about it to bank officials but they could not provide a satisfactory answer. After this he decided to approach the police and called the PCR.   


"When I asked about this to the bank authorities they feigned ignorance. I had put jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh, which includes eight neckpieces, eight sets of bangles, two bracelets and other gold ornaments, in the bag," said Sobti.


He also alleged that he suspected the involvement of one or more employees of the bank. "I saw some CCTV footage in which when I was closing the locker on October 18, a peon entered the locker room. He might be involved," Sobti said. "Police will go through the CCTV footage of the bank. Our investigations in the case are on," added the police official.

"There was light profit taking going into the weekend after a big move up. Also, with equities correcting themselves after a huge move up yesterday, I think the gold market is pausing. There's not a lot of conviction to get into the market going into the weekend," said Adam Klopfenstein, senior market strategist for futures broker MF Global in Chicago. 


For the week, bullion climbed about 6.5 per cent, the biggest weekly gain since January 2009. according to Reuters graphics. 


"We had a really heavy week on the news front with the euro zone and US GDP. The market's trying to work out where gold should be, wondering if this euro zone package has solved the problem," Mitsubishi analystMatthew Turner said. 


US December gold futures lost around 50 cents or 0.3 per cent to end at $1,747.20, but recorded its sharpest weekly gain in six weeks. 


Some investors took profits a day after big rallies in many commodity and equity markets on a long-awaited deal struck by European Union leaders to contain a two-year debt crisis. 


US stocks also edged lower as investors paused after a day-earlier rally lifted the S&P 500 index almost 20 per cent from near bear market levels hit this month. 


Klopfenstein and others added there was little reason to own gold as a flight-to-quality play after the European debt deal was inked and with US economic data showing strength. 


"US data was more supportive especially with the better US Michigan sentiment, which takes away a little bit of flight-to-quality money from gold," he added. 


A survey showed US consumer sentiment improved in October for the second month in a row, as consumers felt more upbeat about the economy's prospects. 


The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan survey's final reading on consumer sentiment overcame weakness reported in the preliminary survey earlier in the month. 


US consumer spending rose in September as Americans saved less to fund purchases amid weak income growth. 


For the week, the EU debt issue helped gold and other precious metals advance, especially as the dollar dropped on the euro zone debt news. 


Even as many investors returned to riskier assets, gold also benefited from some safe-haven flows by investors who remained wary about the euro zone agreement. 


"There's been some euphoria all week, but now some people are saying the details are a bit sketchy. The problem is no one's quite sure what this means for gold. If it is trading like a risk asset then it should go up if scepticism sets in about the euro zone rescue," Mitsubishi's Turner said. 


ECONOMIC FUNDAMENTALS 


Holdings of the largest gold-backed exchange-traded-fund (ETF), New York's SPDR Gold Trust fell 0.05 per cent from Wednesday to Thursday, while that of the largest silver-backed ETF, New York's iShares Silver Trust SLV, remained unchanged for the same period.

Similarly, silver ready spurted by Rs 2,300 to Rs 58,300 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 2,280 to Rs 57,780 per kg.
However, silver coins maintained previous level of Rs 65,000 for buying and Rs 66,000 for selling of 100 pieces in limited deals.

Gold buying normally peaks in the Diwali season

High prices are likely to deter Indians from heavy gold buying this week during the Hindu festival of Diwali, normally an auspicious time to splurge on the metal, experts say.
Gold demand is expected to be moderate, they said, as the country's middle-class -- struggling to cope with high inflation and rising fuel and food prices -- may not have enough spare cash or savings to buy the yellow metal. Gold jewellery showrooms around Mumbai's Zaveri Bazaar, which was hit by a deadly bomb attack in July, have remained half-empty during the festive season.
India is the world's biggest importer and consumer of gold, with the country accounting for over a third of global demand. On top of that the yellow metal is traditionally seen as a hedge against inflation, which in India is approaching double digits. But with rising costs, Indians have become price sensitive consumers, looking to buy gold on price falls instead of waiting for a religious festival or wedding, analysts said.

Some, who like garment trader Dinesh Kapadia prefer buying gold coins and bars as an investment, are not planning to purchase gold at all this Diwali.
"Prices are too high. I will wait," he told AFP, adding that he expected prices to correct further later this year. Gold prices surged this year on frenzied buying by investors, large funds and central banks around the world in the aftermath of a US sovereign debt downgrade and plunging global equity markets.
International gold prices reached a record $1,920 per ounce in early September and while they have since slipped they still remain up 15 percent from the start of 2011. The precious metal, whose key drivers are investment and jewellery, is widely seen as a safe haven in difficult times, but analysts say a combination of factors is keeping demand weak. Indians bought 540 tonnes of gold in the first half of 2011, up 21 percent from the same period last year, according to data from industry body World Gold Council (WGC). But buying has been sporadic since then, even though prices have fallen, with some buyers holding off in expectation of further drops.
Several gold experts have warned that the rapid gold price surge could be a "bubble" waiting to burst.
"People bought a lot (of gold) earlier in the year," said Rajesh Mehta, chairman of India's largest gold jewellery maker and exporter, Rajesh Exports.
Mehta expects "moderate" buying this Diwali, despite the recent fall in prices. Since the turn of the century, when gold averaged $255 per ounce, prices have skyrocketed by nearly 550 percent and industry figures predict gold could hit the $2,000 mark next year.
Anand James, chief analyst at trading firm Geojit Comtrade, said: "Currently buying is sporadic and indifferent." He expects demand for the metal during Diwali this year to be lower compared to 2010, when "momentum was stronger".
Ritesh Gupta, marketing head of Totaram Papalal and Sons, described jewellery sales as "very low".
"Demand is down by 50 percent (from last year)," he told AFP by phone from southern city of Hyderabad, where the 110-year-old firm is based. He blamed the rising cost of living and low disposable income -- after the central bank hiked interest rates 12 times since March 2010 -- for poor sales.
Gold buying normally peaks in the Diwali season on "Dhanteras" day, when Hindus buy precious metals or new utensils as a sign of good fortune, which falls on Monday.
Buying gold continues until December, which is India's festival and wedding season.

Gold exchange traded funds (ETF) had witnessed a record inflow of 100 crore in the month of septemeber- the highest ever in a single month- taking up its total asset under management (AUM) to 8,173 crore. This is the sixteenth consecutive month of inflow despite a fall in prices for the underlyingcommodity in the month, a report by crisil research said. “gold is looked upon as a safe haven in the times of uncertainty and also an asset class with a low correlation to equities. However, instead of directly investing in gold ETF, investors are increasing their exposure to the yellow metal through the gold fund of funds (FoF) launched by various fund houses, according to Mr sundeep Sikka, chief executive officer of reliance mutual fund. The FoF pools money from investors and invests in other mutual fund schemes. Relianes gold savings funds had seen its AUM swell to 3,000 crore with participation from close to 3.8 lakh investors. “more money is flowing in to gold savings funds, because unlike gold ETF, it does’nt require an investor to have a demat account and a stockbroker to make their investment. This provides a hassle-free mode of investment,” Mr sikka added. Others feel that the recent correction in the prices of gold had also prompted investors to accumulate gold. “ this coincided with the launch of gold FoF by various fund houses attracting investors,” said Ms Lakshmi Iyer, headof fixed income and products, Kotak Mahindra Mutual fund.
