Volatile stock market:asset switching by investors in Gold

Volatility and uncertainties in the stock markets have led to "asset switching" by investors who have found a safe haven in gold that has seen a big import jump in the current fiscal. The imports shot up particularly in October to $7.2 billion against a monthly average of $4-5 billion, leaving the government puzzled. 


"Gold and silver continues to puzzle me...We had huge imports of gold in October. This is pure asset switching," Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar commented. Even for the cumulative seven-month period (April- October) gold imports went up by 64 per cent to $38.3 billion. 


Besides the domestic consumption, the country imports gold and precious metals for use as raw material in jewellery for exports. While gems and jewellery exports have also shown a smart growth of 31 per cent during April-October 2011 to $19 billion, bulk of the imports have been used for the domestic consumption. 


"Rising prices for last two years is making gold investor-friendly," Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJPEC) Chairman Rajiv Jain told PTI. The rising demand has led to a big rise of over 28 per cent in gold prices between April and October. On the other hand, stock prices have declined by nine per cent in the same period. 


During Diwali, Jain said, investors had bought more of gold bars than jewellery. "Gold investment will go up...People are pulling out money from the market and investing here."

While gold rose by Rs 225 to Rs 28,540 per 10 grams today

Buoyed by a firming trend overseas and rising domestic demand, both gold and silver kicked off the week on a strong note today in the bullion market here. While gold rose by Rs 225 to Rs 28,540 per 10 grams today to meet the rising demand for the ongoing marriage season, silver rose by Rs 200 to Rs 56,700 per kg on pick-up in demand among industrial units and coin-makers. 


Trading sentiments bolstered, as gold in London rallied to a six-week high and climbed up by 1.1 per cent to USD 1,773.35 an ounce. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's allies pressured him to step aside after contagion from the region's sovereign debt crisis pushed Italy's borrowing costs to euro-era records. 


It overshadowed Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou's agreement to step down, weakening European equities and shifting investor sentiments to the precious metal. Besides, retailers and jewellers buying for the ongoing marriage season further fuelled the uptrend. 


In the domestic market here, the gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity shot up by Rs 225 each to Rs 28,540 and Rs 28,400 per 10 grams, respectively. The metal had gained Rs 95 in the previous session. Sovereigns rose by Rs 50 to Rs 22,250 per piece of eight grams. 


Silver ready recovered by Rs 200 to Rs 56,700 per kg, after losing Rs 600 in the previous session. Silver weekly- based delivery added Rs 50 to Rs 56,300 per kg. Silver coins shot up by Rs 3,000 to Rs 65,000 for buying and Rs 66,000 for selling of 100 pieces on rising seasonal demand.

Trading sentiment turned bearish as retail customers shied away from purchasing at existing costly levels besides a weakening trend in overseas markets last evening. 


Gold price in global markets, which normally set price trend on the domestic front here, declined by USD 10.40 to USD 1,754 an ounce as a six-week rally spurred some investors to sell the precious metal. 


Silver declined notably as industrial units refrained from buying amid drying up of demand from silver coins makers following ending of festivals including 'Diwali.' Sentiment was further effected after silver lost 0.8 per cent to USD 34.28 an ounce in New York last night. 


At home, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity fell by Rs 95 each to Rs 28,315 and Rs 28,175 per ten gram, respectively. Sovereign remained unchanged at Rs 22,200 per piece of eight gram. 


Silver ready plunged by Rs 600 to Rs 56.500 per kg and weekly-based delivery by a same margin to Rs 56,250 per kg. Silver coins dropped by Rs 2,000 to Rs 62,000 for buying and Rs 63,000 for selling of 100 pieces.
