However, pearls seem to be a big trend this year. The city’s glam set is seen sporting pearls, and they tell us how to wear this versatile accessory differently this season.

Fashion icons like Rihanna and Lady Gaga have worn pearls in such unique, contemporary designs that the notion of pearls being “old-fashioned and traditional” has flown out of the window. “Channel instigated my obsession with pearls — faux or real,” says Sana Rezwan, managing director of luxury brand retailer, 23 Carat. The fashoinist tells us, “Now I find myself exploring new ways of wearing them. Take for example, Marios Schwab’s collection of ear cuffs which are taken out of the classic context of pearl jewellery and morphed into fluid lines to follow the contours of a woman’s face, or Mawi’s art deco inspired earrings that conjure old world glamour with a sculptural edge.”

While there is high-end pearl jewellery, the idea that pearls are pricey has also become outdated. As fashion designer Amanda Bachali points out, “You don’t have to go for real pearls. Contemporary jewellery uses pearls in combination with other materials. This creates a much younger look. The pearls can be of varying sizes and lengths. They would suit Western outfits as well as kurtis.”

Model Priya Nayak, also sees pearls as a good alternative. “I’d leave the classic string and multi-strand chokers to the older generation. I like to wear a long pearl necklace around my shoulder with an off-shoulder dress, or twisted around my wrist or even hanging down my back if the dress is low-cut at the back. Pearls are sophisticated, but one should try wearing them in different ways,” she says. “To make things interesting, one can also try different colours. Pink freshwater pearls, black Tahitian pearls and even a combination of colours makes a bold fashion statement.”
